Alisa Horn, Cello

Alisa Horn, a free-lance cellist based in New York City, is a native of Memphis, Tennessee where she studied with Professor Peter Spurbeck. She received her Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from the University of Michigan, studying with Professor Anthony Elliott, and completed her Master of Music in Cello Performance at Northwestern University with Professor Hans Jorgen Jensen.

Alisa was the Second Prize Winner in the WAMSO-Minnesota Orchestra Volunteer Association’s Young Artist Competition and won the University of Michigan Concerto Competition performing Ernest Bloch’s "Schelomo." She was a regular member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the training orchestra of the Chicago Symphony, and has attended many summer programs including Tanglewood, Aspen, Sewanee Summer Music Center, Meadowmount, and the Henry Mancini Institute. Alisa has given numerous solo and chamber music performances throughout the country and recently performed as soloist with the Gadsden Symphony Orchestra and with the Oakville Chamber Orchestra of Ontario, Canada. With pianist, Jue He, Alisa recorded the Rachmaninoff and Miaskovsky Sonatas for Cello and Piano and the duo was featured on McGraw-Hill’s Young Artist Showcase, WQXR-FM in New York City.

Alisa is currently performing regularly in the 2009 Tony Award-Winning Musical and 2010 Pulitzer Prize Winner for Drama, "Next to Normal" on Broadway. She also performed in the 2007 Tony-Award Winning Best Musical, "Spring Awakening" on Broadway.

Alisa has joined jazz greats, Bill Mays and Marvin Stamm, to form The Inventions Trio which performs a fusion of jazz and classical repertoire. The Trio released its debut recording, “Fantasy”, on Palmetto Records which was voted one of the top jazz new releases of 2007 in The Village Voice and has been given four stars in Downbeat Magazine, as well as rave reviews in Jazziz and Jazz Times magazines. After two successful national tours, the Trio continues to perform frequently and has released a second album, "Delaware River Suite."

Alisa has collaborated with many singer/song-writers and composers and has played on several film and TV soundtracks including the documentary film, "Aliens Among Us," the new film, "Paper Man," ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," ABC's "Life on Mars," and "The Tony Awards." 

Alisa loves performing and teaching a wide variety of musical genres from classical to jazz to rock (and beyond) and she enjoys working with students of all ages. She is a Suzuki-trained cello teacher and is very excited about joining In the Pocket NYC!
