Sarah Sommer, Clarinet/Saxophone

A versatile clarinetist,
Sarah Sommer is a freelance musician currently residing in New York City.  Sarah studied with Mark Nuccio of the New York Philharmonic at the Manhattan School of Music in the prestigious Orchestral Performance Master’s Program.  Having performed with members of the New York Philharmonic at Zankel Hall in Carnegie Hall, Sarah has also won numerous awards and competitions in chamber music including recent advancement at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.  She graduated magna cum laude from Northwestern University under the guidance of J. Lawrie Bloom from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.  During the year, she has been seen performing with the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas. In the summer months, Sarah has been a part of the AIMS Festival Orchestra in Austria under the direction of Edoardo Müller and Joseph Colaneri and the National Repertory Orchestra in Colorado.  Sarah is a substitute member of the Symphony in C in New Jersey and Cirque du Soleil.  Having performed in masterclasses led by members of the Vienna Philharmonic and composers such as Paquito D’Rivera, Sarah has also trained with numerous clarinetists across the country.  Sarah remains active in educational and musical outreach events in addition to her freelancing pursuits.  An avid orchestral musician and versatile saxophonist, Sarah particularly loves playing Eb clarinet and recording new productions. Sarah has also interned in the Development Department at the Lyric Opera of Chicago as part of her administrative background.
